The instrument rating
It is not called a certificate but a rating, which gives a private pilot certificate more privileges… A lot more ! Your world as a pilot will expand dramatically such as flying in clouds or landing in reduced visibility. You will learn even more about weather systems and means of navigation but also how they interact with the airplane, such as the static system, including how airspeed or altitude indicators work ; or how to navigate with VHF Omni directional range ( VOR’s ). You will learn about the different types of approaches used on a daily basis by pilots around the world, including precision ( ILS, GPS … ) and non precision ( NDB, VOR … ). Also everything about holding procedures ( pattern in the sky ) will be part of the training. The course will follow the same guidelines as during the private training, including an FAA written test, an oral and practical check. You passed ? Congratulation ! Your hard work is paying off. Now hop on an airplane and enjoy the very rewarding experience of landing on a runway you can only see a few seconds before greasing the wheels on the concrete. It is one of the most amazing moments in a pilot’s life.
